Sleek Quad Core Phone

The Cubot GT99 is one of a large number of chinese made Android Quad Core phones (based on the Mediatek MT6589 processor) introduced in the first half of 2013. In terms of overall capability and features, I would rank it with the Samsung S3.The phone is available with red, white or black back covers. Included in the box is a USB charger (european wall plug), one 2200mAH battery, a USB cable, earphones and also a transparent plastic back protector. A screen protector was also already fitted to the phone. There was a small manual included but I didn't need to refer to it.The phone is a few mm shorter and narrower than the S3 but weighs almost the same so it feels pretty solid. The LCD display is 4.5" diagonal and is nice and bright, although on full brightness the colours seem a little washed out compared to the S3. However it is perfectly fine for viewing pictures or movies. Towards the bottom of the screen are three touch sensitive areas which perform the same function as the button + two touch panels on the S3. The speaker volume is fine, and the mic is to the right of the phone so might pose a problem for left handed users. The on/off button is at the top, as are the charger and earphone sockets. There is a small blue LED which lights when the phone is charging or when there is a notification.The phone comes with Android 4.2 (Jellybean) and also has play store and the chrome browser installed. All panels were in English and I did not see any chinese apps. Once you load the Adobe flash player and the BBC media player, BBC iplayer works fine. The phone is fast, with no lag when changing screens or switching between apps. The Antutu benchmark score is ~ 12800. There is an internal microSD card slot and the phone accepts 2 standard SIMs.The GPS was the only area where I had issues. As with most Mediatek-based phones, the phone firmware does not seem to be set up correctly. Using the MobileUncle app, I was able to download a EPO file which allowed me to lock to some satellites, but you still need to have a wireless or data connection to get a lock within a reasonable time when in a new area, so I wouldn't want to rely on the GPS when travelling.Overall the Cubot GT99 is a well designed and stylish phone which delivers a lot of value for the asking price. The build quality cannot be faulted and apart from the GPS issue, everything works as it should so Cubot can be regarded as good quality manufacturer. If you are interested, there are several video reviews on youtube. Note that Cubot also make a GT89 which uses the same chips but with a larger (lower resolution) screen and a physical home button.
