My Favourite Handset and BlackBarry So Far

Before I review the product itself I just want to spend a moment talking about the seller: Phones 4 U, who sold me this device via Amazon.The device was advertised as being "new", "sim-free" and "unlocked", the 3 main points I looked at before purchasing. The device arrived and my suspicions were first aroused when I noticed that the security seals on the box had been broken and covered with clear plastic stickers. "KK", I thought, "perhaps Phones 4 U just wanted to check the contents of the box before sending it out to me. The next thing I saw that puzzled me was that the battery had been removed from its sealed plastic sheath. When I turned on the device I was met with an O2 splash-screen, and when I inserted my 3UK sim card I was confronted with a message stating that the sim wasn't compatible and that I needed an unlock code from the original network (which I guess was O2). Clearly the phone was not "new", "sim-free" or "unlocked. Clear false advertising and mis-selling by Phones 4 U. I contacted the seller via Amazon and, give them their due, P4U were vary quick to reply, and requested the device's IMEI number, which I promptly email to them. I received an email a little later stating that they had requested the unlock code from the network and I would have to wait for up to 72 hours for this. I waited 48 hours but now the handset is unlocked and the O2 splash screen has been replaced by the 3UK splash screen. Though P4U quickly rectified the situation it is worth seriously considering who you make such expensive purchases from. Contact the seller first and ask them whether the product is "new", "sim-free" and "unlocked" before you purchase, not an obvious "second-hand/reconditioned" handset such as I paid the full price of over £500 for.Now a review of the handset itself. I have used a number of BlackBarries in the past, starting off with the Bold, and Torch 1 & 2, using BB OS 5-7, if I recall correctly. The BlackBarry Z10 uses BB OS 10, which is a lot different from its other incarnations. My first impression of the Z10 was vary good and I found it to be attractive, fairly lightweight and pocket sized, similar in dimensions to the iPhone 4. The screen is the clearest I have seen on any BlackBarry and is totally touchscreen as opposed to the Torch which had a touch screen but with a physical keyboard under the screen. It appears to be vary fast, faster than any other of the BlackBarries I have used, and the screen is vary responsive. I don't know if it was just me being stupid but initially I found the BB OS vary frustrating as it didn't seem to operate in any logical order. It took me agers to find out how to navigate around the various screens and getting back to the home page was a bleeding nightmare. Some screens require you to swipe with one finger to the left, others require a swipe from bottom to top, whilst others seem to want two fingers doing the swiping action. Some screen seemed to not want you to do anything to them and trying to get back to the home page was horrendous. However, I am getting there and things are a lot easier now. The screen set up is similar to most smart phones now, such as the iPhone and Samsung S3 in that it has icons similar to apps on it, but much of the "old" BlackBarry style format is there. It is still vary customizable, so much more than the iPhone, such as allowing you to choose tracks from your music library to act as ring tones or messages/event alerts, and you can still create user groups for various contacts. It still has all the same security settings that users of previous BlackBarries will recognise.The battery compartment is accessed by simply pulling away the soft back to the handset and the Sim Card and SD Card are also under the back cover.It is still too early for me to report on the battery life other than to say that already I have noticed it is vary good indeed, and again better than other BlackBarries. I have had it on all day and surfing the Net on it and it is down to 68% from charged to about 89%, and I think that will improve as the battery beds in.So, how do I like it compared to other BlackBarries and the iPhone 4 and Samsung S3 I have used? The BlackBarry Z10 is my favourite of the lot, though I admit to being biased toward BlackBarries.Oh, and the requirement for a BIS contract is no longer required as the BlackBarry Z10 accesses email servers in exactly the same way as the iPhone and Galaxy does.I plan to update this review with more information as I progress with the device.

I've had this phone since it first came out and from build quality, OS, Interface, Reliability and capability I can't think of a better phone for non Iphone users. I like the IPhone but I prefer Windows 8 phones for ease of use and interfaces.This phone sits between the two basically. It's interface is very easy to use and for anyone who wants something that is like an Iphone minus the gimmicks then you really can't beat it. It take a bit of getting to used to, but haven't found anything wrong with it that is weaker than any other phone around, in fact I hate Blackberry's but LOVE this phone, you can even do a "Playbook" and screenshot anything on screen by pressing both volume buttons which is useful, but there are so many features its not even worth listing.A great phone that is a great alternative to the markey leaders, no gimmicks.

Surprisingly good

I am in a lucky position to have three phones at the moment 1) Blackberry Z10 2) HTC 8X (Windows) 3) HTC One (Android). Why 3? I'm a gadget geek and love to test out the new mobile phone technology and operating systems, hence having 3 totally different phones.So, back to the review - I am finding that I use the Blackberry more than the other two phones, which surprises me as I'm not a dedicated fan of Blackberry.Everything feels nice about the Z10, the grip (rubberised back), the length, width and depth - it sits very comfortably in my hand. It is very light to hold and feels 'sturdy'. Its minimal design is classy and eloquent.At the heart of the Z10 is its operating system 10.1 and it's star feature 'the hub' - all your notifications (Facebook, texts, calls, emails. BBM, whatsapp etc) in one viewing panel. the user experience is very clean and simple - swipe from one screen to another or while in a task (i.e. text), swipe from the bottom and minimise that function. You can keep the task open in the background and chose between them or simply press X to stop them. It takes a short while to get used to the swiping, but once you have it mastered, it becomes very fluent and natural, so much so that when i've switched to the my HTC One, I start swiping only to realise that it simply doesn't have this function (most things are controlled by the home or back keys - the Z10 doesn't have these and relies on swipes).It has a decent dual core processor and 2mb of ram, tasks run smoothly and there is no lag in opening and closing apps or scrolling.The screen has excellent outdoor visibility (unlike Samsung and HTC android screens) - walking around you notice people trying to cover their screens in order to read texts etc, they are always samsung users! The Z10 is perfectly clear, even in direct sunlight. It's colours are punchy and the contrast is great, it's resolution of 350PPI matches that of an iPhone 5, but not in the same league as the HTC One or Samsung S4 - then again, these are classed as HD screens. But don't be fooled by numbers, the human eye cant see any clearer detail beyond 350PPI.Its camera is adequate it's 8mp with a powerful flash but the lack of settings and adjustments fall short. The photos are clear but it's auto focus is hit and miss at times and video recording suffers because of it.It's external speaker for calls etc is very good - a full and rich sound which is also very good for playing music - something I never expected from a blackberry.Another let down is the app market - compared to google and apple, it seriously lacks content! The popular apps simply aren't there (ie instagram, dropbox, Amazon MP3, Skydrive etc) but I recently discovered that blackberry now use a similar file format as Android, so popular apps can actually be 'side loaded' onto it - it requires a PC program to do it, but it's a very simple process, download the BAR file onto your PC, connect the blackberry via USB, open the program and upload the BAR file - it's done! The majority of android apps are compatible
