5Stunning Phone
By Matt Hall
I am going to start this review by stating that I like Microsoft products and have been happily using their software for years. I have a Windows 8 laptop and use Windows at work. Therefore, when I was on the market for another phone it was only going to be Windows Phone 8 for me, as I am already more than happy with the general experience of the OS over the devices I have. Some of you may have already used Android or Apple devices and this may eventually steer you towards the phone that you believe will fulfil your requirements. If you have heavily invested in the walled garden of Apple you may wish to continue doing so. If you are someone that wishes to customise the phone down to the minutest detail, then perhaps Android is for you. However, if you are not particularly tied to the alternatives and you want to experience a fresh new (although it has been around for some time now in WP7.x) phone OS that is fluid, responsive, elegant and works the way you want to work then you may have found a very valid option. As this is about the phone itself rather than the operating system I will continue without going into the specifics of what Microsoft have put together. You can find this information elsewhere on the internet. I would suggest you do play around with a device if you can however, as you cannot really appreciate it until you have some time using it. Plus some of the technical reviews are often Apple biased. I am not saying that Apples are great devices, they are, but some more technical reviews out there cannot see beyond their own Apple ecosystem.Anyway, back to the Nokia specifics. First of all I have to say that I love the bold colours. I wanted a phone that was a bit different and looked a little unique. I think the Lumia range of devices certainly head in that direction. They are bold, they are quite brash but you can obviously get alternative colours if the more colourful ones do not suit your purpose. The phone feels very sturdy in the hand. Yes, it isn't the lightest phone on the market but I find that weight somewhat reassuring. It feels like a quality piece of equipment, not something that is likely to break the first time you knock it over. That isn't to say it won't of course, that will always depend on how you drop these things! So if you are on the lookout for the lightest, slimmest phone on the market you may want to look elsewhere. Personally, I find that not a consideration, although it is on the heavy side for more recent phones it is hardly what you would describe as heavy! Again, if you think this could be an issue, just go to a local store and pick one up.It is one beautiful piece of equipment in my eyes though. I love the discreet curves, the way the glass raises up ever so slightly, the way it feels like it is moulded into one. The 920 is currently the bigger of the Lumias and if you think this is going to be an issue there are other models that could fit your needs. I find the size and weight right.Nokia has some great technology in this phone and you could go so far to say that they were pushing the innovation boundaries for the latter part of 2012. Sure, we will see other phones in 2013 pushing this even further but I guess it depends on what features you are looking for. Personally, one of my main considerations was the camera and this phone has one of if not the best camera phones available right now. The low level capabilities are great, and let's face it a substantial number of pictures we take are in low level light conditions. In addition, the optical image stabilisation really helps to reduce the blur, again something that often catches you out on the move.Away from the camera I find the effort Nokia has put into making some new and unique applications on the OS admirable. This was another reason for me not selecting an alternative WP8 handset maker. I know Nokia are pushing this, they are very proactive with what they do and know from past experience that their customer services was very good.I could write a fair bit more but suffice to say I am extremely happy with my purchase and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this phone to others.

4Impressive but room for improvement
By Gilgamesh
The yellow Nokia Lumia 920 has to be the most stunning looking smartphone in the world right now. It is a refreshing alternative to the iSheep and Android robots that have saturated the scene to the point of gagging. I looked long and hard for a smartphone that would give me what i wanted, mainly 1)Excellent call quality, 2)User friendly texting, 3)Excellent web browsing, 4) Superior camera/camcorder and 5) Clear and efficient sat nav. This device has fulfilled all the above effortlessly. But be warned there are a few niggles. I can't download the Windows 8 app for my Mac being a 10 6 8 Snow Leopard, it only works on 10 7 8 Mountain Lion or newer. A real drag as i can't transfer my iTunes over. However bluetooth works which means i can still transfer my photos, vids and songs individually although most of the album covers do not appear which is also annoying. Also for some bizarre reason Nokia won't allow you to use your music files on the phone as ringtones, you have to connect direct to computer and drag and drop files to the ringtone folder, something i cannot do! This is a huge embarrassment for Nokia and something they need to sort out quickly considering all other phones allow for this including the cheapo ones. The battery however is quite impressive. I managed to make it last almost 2 days with calls, internet, downloads and camera activity. The phone however will not power down whilst charging and simply reboots to idlescreen which is another Nokia hiccup as it simply takes longer. I used flight mode and it took almost 2 and a half hours from dead. Don't go to sleep with it charging though as its not a replaceable battery and overcharging will diminish battery life. Only idiots do that anyway, so if you have your wits about you and your phone in sight it shouldn't be too much to remember to unplug your phone should it now?! There is a decent array of apps to chose from but Nokia and Windows cannot compete with the hegemony of Apple and Android. I personally don't care too much for them as i'm not a social networker and only use the practical ones like Here Maps, YouTube, Weather, Trainline and Translator which all work seamlessly. Another annoying thing is i cannot connect to my WIFI despite several attempts at entering the password it comes back as 'incorrect!" which is excruciating as detected sources appear in the list and the beacon flashes ready to go. I need WIFI to download the Here Maps for the UK, but the updates seem to take care of this. The web browser though does take you to actual internet sites not the mobile ones! (thanks Nokia for listening), all at the speed of light thanks to the Snapdragon 1.5Ghz dual core processor. The zoom in zoom out function is also fantastic with the sharpest font definition i have seen yet.The headset is really sexy, a real alternative to the boring black and white ones from Apple and Samsung and in yellow it gets you noticed too, and it packs a mean punch and comes with volume control. The device sits smoothly and comfortably in normal depth pockets, i rode to town with mine, music blaring, no problem although i did button up my pocket! The speakers are good and go all the way to 30 without distorting, a good litmus test for quality, although i switch mine back to 15 for general use. I have ordered a yellow skin but so far i have been careful with my Lumia and have only placed it on soft protected surfaces. Holding it is a synch and although its a huge phone with a 4 and a half inch screen it sits safely and comfortably in your hand. However unless you have large hands you will need to use both to surf. It is really solidly built and feels like a premium handset unlike the Galaxies which are as plastic as they come. Ok the HTC One and iPhone 5 may have the edge when it comes to materials used but the unibody polycarbonate concaved back of the Lumia and its ultra sensitive touchscreen feels really slick and its design is unique, i love it. In my opinion at just under £500 for design and function this is one of the best smartphones in the world right now and has most definitely relaunched Nokia to the world at large again. They must now improve these shortfalls if they want to compete in the longterm with Samsung and Apple who are clearly ahead in this dept. But as the new kid on the smartphone block they offer stiff resistance and i can just about forgive these quibbles to have this sexy device in my hands, its a real head turner and the call quality is astounding which is what you buy a phone for right? So if you want a premium smartphone offering something different from a different point of view and are prepared to adjust then get the 920, it will reward you in the long run (remember Nokia's Lumia range is only the dawn of great things to come and there will be improvements along the way). If however you want something tried and trusted albeit formulaic then go for the Galaxies, iPhones and HTCs., they may be the big guns in functionality but Lumia more than makes up for in design, character and innovation.

5Give it a go, you'll like it
By Saara
I've always had a Nokia phone (Symbian though), but I'm a Mac user when it comes to computers. So I would say I have experience from both worlds. I've had the 920 for 6 months now and can honestly say I couldn't be happier. Even for a Mac user the OS is very simple and intuitive to use. I only had to check a few tricks from the manual, but other than that you can learn everything just by trying. The battery life is good for a smartphone. I've had this phone with me on 4-hour long ski trips in wintery, very cold Lapland while Sports Tracker was running - keeping it in a Burton insulated case the battery lasted brilliantly even after I got back. The camera is another huge bonus: the picture quality is amazing. This is something people regularly comment on.There might not be as many apps for Windows Phones as there are for Apple and Android devices, but personally I haven't seen a problem with this. I've found several high quality camera apps, sporting apps etc. Some feel the phone is too big, but that's a matter of opinion. I don't mind, but then I appreciate a big, clear screen from which I can easily read articles and e-books. The screen is easy to read even in direct sunlight - and can be used with gloves.I would recommend Nokia Lumia 920 for anyone looking for a solid, well-designed smartphone with an operating system unlike any other. Windows 8 might not work on computers, but it sure works on phones. I've sang this phone's praises to all my friends - many of whom have bought one and been equally as pleased.
