Sony w995

I've been using different types of Sony Ericsson mobiles for last 5 years and the only one I was a bit disappointed with was k850i. But lets talk about w995...If someone like me have used SE mobiles for a long time then there won't be any problem with getting used to this one as all of SE phones got almost exactly this same menu, which is really easy to learn even for a newbie. But what do I like in this phone?1. Design - black, stylish, metal cover, really strong (dropped it few times on the hard ground, but no scratch, no breaks).2. Camera - 8.1 MP is taking really good photos even in the dark. I've been recording really great quality movies with it as well. Highly recommended.3. Walkman - this phone supposed to be a walkman and is doing its job really well. Sound quality is really high and when connected to portable speakers you can really enjoy your music (and it's easy to use as well).4. Watching movies - I used AnyVideoConverter to convert movies to mp4 to watch them on w995 - quality of movies is quite good, so still can't complaint.5. Making phone calls - this is what mobile supposed to be - sound quality is great, when switched to loud speaker you will hear no barks, noises, crashes ect.6. Software - easy to learn and use menu. SatNav is OK, Skype (because I'm on 3) is my must have software. Never had any problem with it and I've had this phone already for 6 months.7. Internet - internet connection or WiFi works really well. I'm using OperaMini to browse the net and it works graet.Now what I don't like in this phone is:1. FlashPlayer - there is only basic FP installed - I wish it was like on PC, but... well - there is only few mobiles on the market with it.2. Battery life - have to charge the battery in every 36-48 hours, but I think it's because of me using the internet for most of the time.Overall: so far the best mobile I've ever had and used. And it's really worth that money. Would recommend to anyone.

A near perfect upgrade, well worth considering

I've recently upgraded from a W580 to the new W995, and it was well worth the upgrade. This is altogether a better offering from Sony, with a bigger screen and better features all-round, but with a menu system that will be immediately familiar to previous Ericsson users. If you're not using an Ericsson, the navigation is one of the reasons to change, because it's really great. The menus are clear and look professionally designed, and it's very easy to find your way around the phone.The W995 shows off many cool features - it has a bigger display than its predecessors, all the expected applications (Calendar, Calculator, Note taker, Timer, Stopwatch), a Walkman media player, an 8.1 megapixel camera, a light that doubles as a flash for the camera, video recording and editing capability, video calling (using a second miniature forward-facing camera), Wifi/internet modem support and comes with an 8GB memory card.The list goes on: the display can auto-rotate so you can turn your camera or Walkman sideways for a wider display, the camera and video functions are more sophisticated (with some in-built effects, face recognition, auto-focus and image stabiliser), photos can be GPS-tagged, there's a Slideshow application that will re-play your photos using different transition themes, the video player comes set-up to work with YouTube and BBC iPlayer, and there are numerous games available.The Walkman deserves a special mention, because alongside Sony's Media Go application (for Windows PCs), you can rip your CDs to Mpeg4 (AAC) or MP3 format, grab information about your albums from GraceNote, and copy them to your phone over your PC's USB connection. I was very impressed by how easy it was to do this with Media Go, and how quickly I could get my CDs onto the mobile. It really doesn't take very long. Sony are also taking album covers from GraceNote and they will be displayed on your phone too when you browse your music by album - very nice, but be warned, sometimes you'll get the wrong album cover. Fortunately you can supply your own one in Media Go. I can listen to these albums on the train with the supplied earphones, and there's a second socket if you want a friend to be able to listen in too (although you'll need to buy a second set of earphones for this).There are a few things I don't like about the phone. The default selection of ringtones is not great, you have to download more if you want a decent selection. In my opinion, the themes supplied with the phone (the look-and-feel of the menu system) is inferior to the W580 - in fact I disliked them so much that I copied the Strobe theme from my W580 onto the W995 using the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software supplied.The Walkman boasts "shake control" which is rubbish - the idea is you hold down a special button and tilt the phone in different directions to change track or adjust the volume. Really, I hate this feature, it's awkward. Fortunately you can advance tracks using buttons instead if you don't like the shake control, and adjust the volume using the little black buttons on the side (labelled as camera zoom buttons, but double as volume control).I was also disappointed that, while the supplied PC Suite software was able to copy my text messages from the W580 onto my PC, it was not possible for me to then transfer them onto the W995, i.e. it's a one-way transfer only. It is possible however, to copy my address book over from the old phone to the new this way (and via Bluetooth as well if I wanted to).Another gotcha is that, while you can edit together your videos using their VideoDJ application on the phone, adding effects and replacing the soundtrack too if you wish, sometimes these edited videos cannot be transferred to your PC. You can however transfer anything you recorded directly in the camera as MP4 files. VideoDJ annoyingly can't handle soundtracks provided as MP3 or WAV, it must be MP4, although the Walkman itself doesn't care and can play all formats.Also be aware that although the built-in camera is indeed 8.1 megapixels, the photo quality will never compare to that of a digital camera. It doesn't matter how many megapixels you've crammed into your hardware, mobile phones simply can't pack in a decent sized lens. The photos I have taken on the W995, while superior to the W580 and good enough for impromptu "happy snaps", won't produce the same high quality results as a dedicated camera. The shots I've taken with it so far are disappointing, all those lovely blue summer skies in the background have come out white, and autofocus seems a bit hit-and-miss...However, taking all into consideration, this is an excellent handset. The phone looks good, is great to use, and is up there amongst the best choices on the market. I really love it, I would happily recommend it to anyone. Your only real decision is whether to buy the phone outright or on a monthly contract.

This phone is excellent, everything that it says to do it can... wifi, the music player, the camera is decent enough, the mobile internet works well. However where it is let down is by network firmware. For example, my orange locked handset cannot use the GPS function through google maps as this is locked to the Orange map software, which is no where as good. The phone could be debranded however this then invalidates the warranty and with a free 18 month that is a great service (i have used it in the past), it is well worth keeping this. However the attraction of the phone working exactly how i want it is very tempting....Another feature is the apps which is confusing between phone to phone, and seemingly network to network... I cannot get youtube or wayfinder to install on my phone, as it says the device is not compatiable... however there are videos on youtube of both these things working, it seems old versions can run them, but new ones can't which seems ridiculous! However i do have the iplayer app, where you can watch live tv with a wifi connection, which is definitely a nice thing to have. Youtube can still be run no problem through a decent browser, i recommend opera mini as this has been great with mine, so its not a massive issue, just a dedicated app would be nice.
