Worthy of serious consideration for all types of phone users

After much deliberation I decided to purchase the Nokia N9.Phone HistorySome background: my previous phone was a Nokia N900, and before that I had various Symbian devices. I have also worked in the mobile development sector so have used a huge number of different phones and operating systems.So why the N9?Not being particularly loyal to any brand I made up a list of features I must have from a phone:---"Real" multi tasking--Decent storage space or SD car slot--Good camera--DNLA or uPNP playback--GPS--Ability to drag and drop content to the phone from WindowsThe N9 covers all the above but with a degree of style too. The form factor is the same as the Nokia Windows Lumia800 but without a camera button, consequently all of the Lumia800 cases and accessories also work for the N9.I have now had this phone for 3 days, on day 3 the latest firmware was delivered OTA (over the air). No need to connect to a PC and after 30mins the phone was updated (PR1.2) and new features evident. I have been playing with the features extensively and the use of the phone feels natural after a very short space of time. Navigation through screens and on applications is done with swipe gestures and works impressively well. The onscreen keyboard is very good and includes "swipe" which, after a couple of hour's usage, is an essential tool.The screen quality is fantastic and super bright, this is one phone that is easy to read even in the strongest of sunlight and watching videos or looking at photos is a delight.The web browser is excellent too, especially in landscape mode and is very readable and is simple to pinch the zoom too. Saving bookmarks to the main application screen means that favourite sites are a simple touch away. The browser does not support flash but is HTML5 compatible.This phone supports Facebook and Twitter out of the box and they integrate very well with the inbuilt contacts application too.It even has NFC (Near Field Communication) which allows you to tap the device to pair and may be the future of new payment systems.So what are the downsides?It is not available on a contract in the UK and consequently no one will have heard of it (but that makes it exclusive and special :0 )The sim card slot is micro sim, but this is no big obstacle and most providers will supply you with a replacement micro sim free of charge.Applications choice is way less that the main market leaders (Apple OS, Android and Windows Mobile 7) but the quality is there. There are plenty of good games and key apps are there or in development.SummaryThis is a phone for those who appreciate function over form, but it also has form too! There is a fantastic community surrounding the MeeGo operating system this phone runs on. It is also amazing customisable, for example for the more advanced user you can open a developer mode and run a Linux terminal. From here explore the phone from the inside so to speak. The key thing is you can do as you will and do not have to jail break or run applications to get around restrictions. Changing the firmware is easy and legal.Is it a phone for everyone?Well yes, the predecessor the Nokia N900 was a lot less polished and could be quite daunting for the less technically minded. The N9 on the other hand should satisfy both camps. It is the most intuitive touch screen smart phone I have tried, and I have tried them all!If only Nokia had stuck with this rather than joining with Microsoft I believe they would have a global winner on their hands. As it is, it will be one of their best kept secrets, which is a crying shame.

I've used android before on the Asus Transformer tablet but after half a year of use sold it as Android was only good for games and media. With the money I got for the tablet I bought the N9 and am very pleased with the phone, the UI is written very well, not needing a super proccesor. The 64GB means you can put whatever you want on it, not having to worry about anything (as I had to while having 16GB on the android device). The multitasking is better then any device I have seen and it's so easy to close apps you don't need anymore (also note that you can multitask as much as you want, I have seen people having more then 10 apps open at the same time).The design is just amazing, you just need to hold and see one in reality to know what all reviewers are talking about! The camera is not as good as the N8 but then again nothing is ... The carl zeiss lens and 8MP sensor make sure your pictures are sharp and good quality. For me this is the phone to go, as no other phones did what I wanted. Being a Nokia you also have free maps and navigation for the whole world!The only down point is that there aren't many apps at the moment but there are coming more and more. Only a few that I would still like to see in the ovi store (as I don't need the thousands of games found on Android).If you want a quality phone and don't need a million apps, then buy the Nokia N9!

Nokia is well know by their products, although using Meego is a hole new experience. Something similar for those that used Maemo on Nokia's N900.The OS is great. Stable, easy to use. The display is incredible clear, great colours. Thanks to the incredible AMOLED display.Having 64GB is a great addition, specially when microSD expansion isn't available.I just wish they had the phone in White. Couldn't find it anywhere.
