Smart & Tough 4.3 / Runbo X5

The Runbo X5 (aka Smart & Tough) is a very interesting rugged Android phone with some surprising features. The thing that strikes you when you first remove it from the packaging is how big and heavy it is. It feels very solid and well built but it weighs 500g (that's over a pound) and is an inch thick. I don't want to double-up on anything in the seller's item description, so here are a few additional points:- It runs Android 4.04 (ICS). It has only one kind of English (unfortunately, the worst kind - American), although if you install another keyboard, like Swype, you can teach it proper English. It does, however, understand the European time and date system. It has dual active SIMs and handles them well. It has a built-in walkie-talkie with a frequency range of 400 - 470 MHz but not all of this range is legal everywhere, so the channels have to be set up depending on where you intend to use it and you have to screw the aerial into the top, making the thing even bigger. It has a laser pointer in the top, but no button to operate it; as with the torch, you have to go into an app to use it then wake the screen up to be able turn it off again (like the walkie-talkie, someone will find this useful). The camera button can be set up to answer and end calls so you can do this one-handed, with gloves on if necessary (a useful feature) and of course, as with all Android phones, you can set up the power button to end calls. It will keep time from the network, or from GPS. It has an SOS button on the side which can be set up to call and text up to three numbers in an emergency. It has a 3.8Ah battery which is big, both capacity-wise and physically - battery life is impressive, especially considering it's running two SIMs on two networks. Overall, the OS is quite responsive and useable with no noticeable lag. The screen is bright and responsive. The pull-down notification-toggles scroll across the screen in three groups; one group is screen related (Brightness, Timeout and Rotation), another group is the usual connectivity-related group and the last group is sound profiles (custom profiles can be set too). The phone can be set to power-up and power-down at certain times / days. The GPS works well, it supports A-GPS and GPS EPO assistance, whatever that is. The camera is quite useable and the quality of the images not bad. The camera can be accessed by holding the camera button and shots can be taken with the physical or the on-screen shutter release. The camera also supports touch-to-focus which works quite well and there's an LED flash. Apps-wise, no real surprises apart from the fact that Google Maps and Google Search are missing, but you can install them. Baidu input is in there too. Apart from anything mentioned earlier, it's pretty much standard ICS. However, there was one small problem in that there appears to be no Calendar sync option for the Google account in the "Accounts & Sync" section - two different Google accounts were used and only Google Mail and Google Contacts appear as sync options - this may be by design or an Android bug, I don't know but Google Calendars users should be aware of this (although there may be some sort of work-around). The speaker / ringer is very loud which is what you need in a rugged phone that may be used in industry or outdoor pursuits. Storage-wise, there's a total of 503MB of internal storage, 2.05GB of phone storage, plus a micro SD card slot. There's 1GB RAM. Overall, the phone performs very well and certainly feels as robust as the manufacturer claims but the size and weight mean that it's not for everyone.

Screen Broke on 20cm drop. cornor hit.

My Smart&Tough Broke after falling 20cm out of my car when I opened the door!!!!! The screen shattered badly in a branch like pattern, with 12 arms, starting at one cornor and many small pieces of glass fell off. This glass is NOT gorilla glass, its totally false advertisement. I bought the phone mainly because it said that it can survive 100 drops from 2m on concrete. I am pissed and feel totally ripped off.Apart from this, apps like "Flight Radar" keeps crashing and my OBD2 programs for diagnosing my car does not work on this phone, plus the rotating screen sometimes does not kick in and you look like a fool trying to show someone a picture. The flashlight is also very weak.GPS signal is not obtaniable in open air unless you turn its left side skywards and dont touch the left side at all. If you enable the SOS feature, which can flash the laser, you can't turn the laser on constantly anymore, in the laser/flashlight, only for 1s at a time, big bug! the phone has a SOS, and two walkie buttons on its side, which you can not programmable to do other things which is really annoying. There is however blue LED flashing when you have mail or text which really convenient.

Great Phone with all the Android features but the FM Walkie Talkie PMR446 they offer is illegal to use in the UK (up to £5000 fine). Buy from Durrocomm WXT5 they fix the Walkie Talkie frequencies and power to the UK legal requirements. The Durrocomm phone also has an uprated 8Mp camera and is Cheaper.
