Sola unresponsive touchscreen problem

If you are considering buying this phone, do make sure you consult the Sony mobile forum first of all for this product. You will notice that there are a huge number of xperia sola owners complaining about the touchscreen lag issue. Basically, in cold weather, the screen becomes totally unresponsive, to the point of rendering the phone unusable. A temporary fix is apparently putting the phone in direct sunlight for 15 minutes - but seriously, why hasn't Sony issued a recall on this product? I am frankly fed up with the 'brush problems under the carpet' issue adopted by so many multi-national corporations like Sony. If they are unprepared to do something proactive about this problem, then it is only fair that affected customers ensure that people who are considering buying this product are informed of the mistake they are likely to be making.

This is a nice, light phone that feels good in the hand...but honestly, that's about as far as it goes.In fact I had mine for about a week before I packaged it back up in the box and returned it to Sony for a refund.The Android operating system is fairly average, to be honest. Marginally better than the iPhone as it's more versatile, but not a patch on the Windows OS used on Nokia phones now. But then again, Android isn't under review here - the Xperia Sola is. So I'll stick to the point.The first and foremost issue that I would take with this phone is its unreliable network connection. I found that it would randomly drop connection even when my iPad (on the same network) still had a signal just fine. Whether this means the handset was faulty, whether it doesn't pick up signal as well as other phones or whether it just has some glitch or other, I don't know. Had it only been this at issue, I'd have been tempted to try getting a replacement.But the battery life I found appalling, and that's what really made my mind up for me. I was finding that on average use - which for me is a fair amount of texts, perhaps the odd web page and few to no calls - I would struggle to get even a full day from it. In contrast, my iPhone would last until bedtime even playing games on it throughout the day, and the Nokia Lumia 520 that I have now lasts from morning til night with between 60-80% battery remaining. A phone like the Xperia Sola, therefore, which I would have to charge as soon as I got home to continue using it into the evening, was very disappointing.Smart Tags are a novel and potentially handy idea...when they work. I found that scanning them could be a fiddly task.I also found the on-screen keyboard to be rather awkward, perhaps because of its size, and this led me to switch to 'phone pad' option rather than use the full qwerty keyboard.Having previously owned a Sony Ericsson phone back in 2010, I was looking forward to unboxing and using this. Once I had done so, I was looking forward to sending it back.Very disappointing. I expected a lot more.

Many poor features

It's an Android phone which says a lot about it's functionality (some people love Android, others love iOS and if you are considering a Sola then you have made that decision). Beyond that, the specific issues on this phone:1. (Walkman) Player volume is totally inadequate. You need to buy e.g. PowerAmp with a preamplifier and decent controls to get a reasonable volume out (not all players will do this; PlayerPro ends up distorting too much when volume becomes reasonable).2. Headphones are the worst I have every experienced. Fine if you are sitting still but outside, as they shift in your ear a tiny bit, so the bass and treble disappear/volume disappears. To make things worse the mad positioning of the mic ensures that the ear pieces will shift every few steps!3. Browser very unstable (crashes on some sites). Chose another - there are some decent free ones.4. Sony's support is ... well just not there.5. GPS very very slow to get a fix. You MUST downloads a tool to fetch aGPS data to make it work to any expectation.6. Phone is just "a bit sluggish (both on Gingerbread and after upgrade to ICS). Processor not quite meaty enough so starting apps (e.g. to make a call) is just "sluggish".7. Mac Sync software (Bridge for Mac) sort of works but is more than a pain to use (e.g. every time e.g. iTunes updates e.g. a play count, so it completely refreshes its display, repositioning you to the top of your list of music !! It's just an example of how they don't use their products as any user would/does scream at the poor usability. But you may end-up not using it much.8. The Walkman app is not very good at using your album artwork and for some reason confuses it with other albums. Apps to fetch and select correct artwork work fine (and show the correct artwork) but the Walkman app refuses to use the new/correct artwork. But there are better players available and you will be needing one anyway to be able to hear it (get decent volume - and I don't have a hearing problem).I'm keeping the phone because I can't really justify the costs of a higher end phone and I have the modern style of phones that are so big (Sola is a bit large for me). But having read about the situation Sony are in, I can understand why. It looks like they don't try out their own products.This is my first smartphone so, would I buy one knowing what I know now ? Answer: I would probably go for a higher end phone which I recognise would cost more.Interestingly, the phone is quite a bit cheaper direct from Sony than as on Amazon (today anyway).Update: Loads more serious issues found with the phone - to the point were I would describe it as "not fit for purpose". Sony support is a complete disaster (though I actually suspect it is a 3rd party company called SBE).Doing so many things with the phone is a struggle. Buy at your peril.
