5A triumph for Blackberry
By Mrs. Jo Anne Davies
Having received the new Blackberry Bold 9900 today I am happy to report that most of the major flaws of the previous Bold family have been fixed. The web browser is snappy and responsive, the touchscreen is easy to use, fluid and a delight (no doubt because of the Snapdragon CPU). The phone is very thin for a Blackberry and the fact that it's got a touchscreen as well is particularly impressive given the brick-like feel of the Torch. The camera is a huge step forward from the camera in my old 9700, however, it still has a way to go to match up to the superior iPhone 4 camera (and most likely the iPhone 5 that is forthcoming). The major strength, as always with Blackberry, is the keyboard which is a return to form. The keyboard is the same size and feel that we had in the old Bold 9000 and it's fantastic! For Blackberry users, the Bold 9900 is amazing and represents a great deal of engineering and research by RIM to produce a phone that is functional, stylish and a joy to use. For users of iPhone and Android however, RIM has yet to make a phone which is as comprehensive or as forward thinking as iOS and Android are. RIM has a ready made consumer pool for its phones; we all love Blackberrys and I personally wouldn't move to another manufacturer. However, RIM fails to develop phones that will make users want to switch from Android or iOS and that's where the money is. It is my feeling that although the Bold 9900 is a huge step forward, anyone switching from iOS or Android will most likely miss some of the features they've come to know and love in their previous platform.I highly recommend this phone to anyone with an older Blackberry - get it and you won't look back. For iOS and Android users I'd recommend borrowing a friend's phone to test drive it first because you'll either love Blackberry or think it's antiquated and a touch passé.

4Blackberry 9900 - a mixed bag
By Dao202
I have had the Bold 9900 for 7 months now so I feel relatively able to give it an honest and fair review.THE GOODDesign - The Bold is very pretty, it's thin, sleek and modern and friends have been very interested in it generally. Its very thin but feels solidly built and has a nice 'weight' to it, not too heavy and not too light. There are plenty of cases available and mosts add very little bulk to the handset which is a bonus. The screen - lovely, offers vibrant colours and being touch capadble is much more intuitive for web browsing etc than the trackpad, however the general navigation of menus etc is still easier with the trackpad as the screen is slightly too small for menus etc (especially if, like me, you have fat fingers!). Personally i like the choice of touchscreen and trackpad as it offers the best of both worlds but again, thats personal choice.Build quality - it's excellent, no lose bits, everything fits tightly and once a case is on it is near indestructible (mine has been dropeed 4-5 times on varying surfaces and was in my pocket during a number of falls while skiing and has suffered no damage or ill effects)The keypad - now this is the game changer for me, I previously used an HTC Hero and its touchscreen keypad which was good, however after using the Bold keypad I struggle to see how i could go back to touchscreen. The keys are large and perfectly sculpted to allow fast typing, its comfortable to use and makes writting emails a pleasure, it really is great and makes using my work Curve 3G seem terrible!Software - Blackberry 7 will be familiar to most Blackberry users as its really just a tweaked version of the previous BB OS6 but its a decent, if a tad complex, OS which offers lots of settings customisation if you're willing to really explore the menus. Its not as inutitive as Android or Apple but its decent enough.Features - BBM is great, my girlfriend also has a blackberry so this makes communication even easier plus its free with wifi connection if you're abroad so no stupid holiday text charges! Blackberry travel is a brilliant tool, collating all travel confirmation emails and building the travel summary for you (flight number, times, booking ref, connections etc tec) it saves printing things off and carrying them around on trips. Facebook and social networking work fine and email is excellent as you would expect (that is the Blackberry forte after all).Calls and reception - Generally very good althoug i expect poor experineces will be down to the service provider more than the phone, for exaple my Orange signal is pretty terrible as soon as i'm indoors which is an orange problem not the phone (my dad has the same problem with orange signal on a different phone brand)THE BADThe Battery - Blackberry actually downsized the battery in this from the Bold 9780 despite the bigger processor and RAM increase whcih means battery is not up to usual standards. Heavy use will get you 12ish hours of life in my experience while standby will last around 24-30 hours with minimal use and 2G only (for moderate users expect to get through from 7am-11pm before charging) I did find that my usage varied wildly and have found a trick to keep it steady. Every week turn the phone off then remove the battery, replace and turn on. The 'hard' reset down seems to reset the battery and keeps it holding its charge for longer. Doing this gets me almost 2 days of minimal usage before i need to charge. The promised update to BB 7OS should also help the battery usage.Blackberry app world - quite simply woeful, few apps of any use, free apps are generally rubbish, most new apps that come out aren't BB compatible which is annoying. If Blackberry want to be taken seriously in smartphones they need to sort their app ofering out ASAP.Glitches - I have had a few freezes and egg timers on certain apps and a couple of random crashes but none have lasted long or had any major impact on the phone, there are clearly bugs though (1.2GHz and 100MB RAM shouldnt need loading time while playing solitaire!)The width - I have average sized hands and the width can make single finger browsing difficult, it really is a 2 hands phone but so are most smartphone nowadays.Internet browsing - whatever people say it simply isn't as good as apple or android, its slower and less responsive albeit not unusable. I wouldn't use it for much more than browsing the news or for getting an address etc.OVERALLThe Bold 9900 is a mixed bag, if you want high end internet and apps then it won't be for you, if you want a more streamlined messaging, calling and emailing machine then it will be more suited. Personally, I find that most people don't even use 90% of the apps they have and I don't want to spend hours browsing for them or doing internet research on my phone so the Bold suits me fine. A better battery would be good and some more intuitive software so it's not perfect hence 4 stars but its a decent phone at a reasonable price on contract, just make sure you are buying it for its strong points not because you want an iphone 4s at half the monthly cost!

5Great Berry
By DetlevCM
In Spring 2007 I got my very first BlackBerry after a 9 month break from a mobile phone... (broken Sony Ericsson - design flaw... broken internal cable in folding mechanism) 3 years and about 7 months that device was responsible for my communication - it suffered several drops, once took a bath in mineral water... and worked flawlessly - with just a few scratches to show from the drops (onto tarmac). This year, I decided to get a new Berry - the Bold 9900.So far I must say I am extremely pleased with the device - the case is firm with no squeaky parts (as for example the back on the 9800). The weight is nice and suits the device, though it feels hefty compared to its size.Coming from a Pearl 8120, I did take a short while to get used to the keyboard - also changing from qwertz to qwerty, but once you have spent a few days on it, you'll be very fast at typing. It is a marvellous keyboard - in fact, that was the key point that made me upgrade my old phone to the new Bold (in contrast I don't like the 9800).BlackBerry Bold users are possibly immediately at home on it - other keyboard users will learn to love it very quickly - provided they know the computer keyboard layout.Personally I am a strong opponent of touchscreens - especially if they are the only input method. Considering that full control is possible with just the trackpad, the touchscreen is a nice addition for those few cases where it does become useful - e.g. flipping between BlackBerry Messenger chats. Also as far as I can tell it is perfectly responsive. The next point that has been pointed out in reviews is the snappyness of the OS - the Bold is fast, very fast. Using several apps at the same time, flicking between them, I did not get an hourglass at all.Overall a nice step up from my old BlackBerry where I had to wait for a response every now and then - so users of multiple applications should not be limited by the phone's capabilities.Having said this - the browser is fast and smooth in its controls. If you look into the depth of the options you will find that it can use up to 46MB of RAM (just checked) - making it possibly the key RAM user besides the OS itself - still, that leaves plenty of free RAM on your phone. For mine specifically, it is 369MB of free RAM. Keep in mind please that is may sound as if it is using a lot of RAM, but 256MB of RAM are reserved for the GPU, leaving 512MB of RAM for the OS - which is more than enough, considering I have over 300 remaining free MB.Lastly - battery life:Under most heavy use I have managed to empty the batter in about half a day - but that was pretty much nonstop use of the browser, BBM, documents to go (supports MS Office and Adobe PDF, the later for reading), the SMS function as well as phone calls, running Wi-Fi and the 3G connection all the time.Oh, and some maps usage too - which works very well by the way for a pedestrian. On a more normal use this phone lasts through the day without issues and charge left over.Overall if you like BlackBerys, this is possibly the phone for you, also if you want an efficient tool.I am completely happy with my decision - while I feel sorry to let my Pearl go, the new Bold should, at least for me, make my life a little bit easier.
