5Had my Asha 303 a few weeks now
By Robert A. S. Allan
When my last phone died (another dead touchscreen /sigh), I came across an ex-display unused SIM free Asha 303 at such a good deal, I decided I could live with another touch screen phone (at least for a while). I was going to give up on them, but I can resist everything but temptation. *grins*First impression, after putting in a 32gb microSD card and charging the battery, during the clean up (uninstalling stuff I don't use like Facebook and Twitter), is that it's a brisk, very responsive phone. I reluctantly admit the screen is very good too. I was a bit disappointed that there's no GPS built in, but it should pair ok with my Bluetooth GPS receiver (the upside is not having GPS should help battery life). After reading an uncomplimentary review about the QWERTY buttons while waiting for delivery, I was a bit unsure how they would be (though for me even bad buttons are much better than no buttons), but fair play, they are very much better than I was led to expect. For the size of the phone I don't think they can really be any better spacing wise, and the click's are nice and positive. My fingers are probably about average in size, so most should get on well with the keyboard. So for sending texts, e-mails, and doing calendar entries, notes, etc., the phone is great.RF performance is very good, with good signal, calls are clear both ends (some reviews have said it's a bit quiet, but even though somewhat deaf, it is ok for me, especially as the speakerphone side of it is good, and easy to switch on or off in a call). It's easy to configure the homescreen with the applications most frequently used, so mine is a bar for clock/alarm, a bar for wifi lan search (range seems better than some), and the lower bars I have laid out for calendar, todo list, notes, conversations, internet telephone, message creation shortcut, and e-mail (it was easy to configure my pop3 email, I don't have a BT pop3 mail account, but the built in BT mail has a setup process, so I just hijacked it and used my mail server log in and address details). The new Nokia browser seems ok, but I have been using Opera for so long now, I just installed Opera Mini and that runs fine (it's really quick too).Possibly an essential for more than a few, via Nokia Suite (a free download), the phone syncs well with Outlook (mine's the one that came with Office 2003) for the calendar, ToDo list, and notes, which is very useful (heck for me, it's invaluable for doing convenient shopping lists - I forget to take lists with me, but always have the phone). Doing it this way, there's none of this Cloud type inexcusable security liability either. If you have Outlook and don't use it, this phone is a good excuse to blow the cobwebs off it. Your personal data with your own control over it takes some beating, and I've been around IT and the internet for far too long to use anything Cloud based (or even Facebook and Twitter, for that matter).I must admit my first experience with battery life was not good, the battery lasted just over a day of heavy use. Then I realised I had used a dodgy microUSB lead, a weird one that sucks the power out of the battery with most things, while falsely showing that it's charging (it seems there are a lot of dodgy USB leads around, and I seem to have ended up with a selection). So I recharged the battery with the mains charger, and managed to dig out an old Nokia micro-USB lead (pity the phone doesn't come with one), and problem over. Perhaps too early yet to get a full impression (the battery capacity should improve noticeably with a few more charge and discharge cycles), but with about three days use from full charge at the moment, with a fair bit of wifi (e-mails, etc), some phone calls, and a fair few texts, it's still showing the battery as fully charged. Can't comment about the camera as I don't use the ones in phones (I use a Canon for stills and a JVC camcorder). It's probably the same as the one in my old 6303i (I wish they hadn't stopped making that phone) which was easily good enough for what it was. Can't comment about games either (it had some, including that Angry Birds nonsense, but I deleted them without trying them). The size, weight, and shape in the hands, is nicely ergonomic and comfortable to use, it's also light enough to be very comfortable in the pocket (I picked up a cheap pouch style cover with a pull tab to help slide it out, for it to live in, which seems protectively tough and an ideal fit), menus are usual Nokia and straightforward and easy, the MP3 player definitely works (sounds good with even the pair of earbuds I got free with the phone pouch).Apparently the Asha 303 is Nokia's flagship 'feature' phone for the Third World, and as a result, the build quality is 'up there' to their usual good standards. Overall I'm impressed with this phone and I'm more than glad I ended up with one. I hope Nokia keep producing phones like this for the Third World (and marketing them in the West as well), because after a long list of not very 'Smart' phones, they are exactly the type of sensible and highly competent phone I now look for. It's perhaps worth adding that if pennies are tight, probably the most useful features can be had at a significantly lower cost with the Asha 302 (which has lots of great reviews, seemingly well deserved too). Personally, I was close to getting the 302, but I had such a good deal offered with my 303, there was no saving, and now after living with the 303 for a bit, should it be stolen or something, I would definitely pay more to get another one if funds allowed. If wifi isn't important to you (I hammer the wifi connection with a phone at every opportunity, which saves an absolute fortune on phone plans, being able to get away now with a tenner a month on a SIM only deal, so can't do without it - but that may be why my Smart phone screens clap out so fast), then the 201 is about the same, and another potentially large saving (and it's also got good reviews).Hope the above helps some.Update: On battery life. With my Smart phones, the battery indicators pretty much said 'as soon as you see it lower than fully charged, recharge it'. Well the indicator on this 303 is different. I get about 3 days use before the indicator drops to 75% (first segment), then about another 3 days before it drops to 50% from 75%, then about 4 days before it drops to 25% from 50%, and it's now been 3 days at 25% (but unfortunately will have to recharge it tonight as I need the phone this week). This seems to be about the battery life of my old Nokia 6303i, even though the 303 has wifi (which I use a fair bit).

4Excellent phone for me
By Eva Kanovska
I chose this Nokia because I have very good experience with previous Nokias I owned but mainly because I conservatively still insist on hardware keybord (more and more difficult to find).I am very satisfied with this phone although I am still getting used to the rather small keys of the keyboard. There was only one hick-up for me - it took me a while to find out how to switch off the data connection (not relevant for the majority that uses data Internet connection). That also solved the problem with the battery life, it now holds for 4 days (nb I do not call much).

5Fabulous value
By Mr. Kevin Wilkinson
I don't need a phone that will launch missiles or control NATO - for me a phone is working well if it is easy to use and can handle occasional internet in emergencies. This phone does all of that with style.Good keypad allied to a sensitive but finger friendly touch screen are the ideal for me. Easy to set up and use, texting is simplicity itself and call quality is very good. My wife is a little deaf and loves this phone because of the call clarity.I have browsed the internet for odd things and it works well enough - I am told by my children that it is fairly fast but limited compared to their models (which cost more than twice the price). For me this is a well made phone that works as a modern phone. If you need to launch missiles you may need to look elsewhere; if you need a good modern phone try this one
